Ethiopian Tree-Ring Laboratory (ETRL) Home

The Ethiopian Tree-Ring Laboratory (ETRL) was established in 2005 as part of a collaborative project supported by the Laboratory of Tree-ring Research (LTRR) of the University of Arizona, U.S.A. (http://www.ltrr.arizona.edu/) and the Department of Geography at the University of Wales Swansea (UWS), U.K. (http://geography.swan.ac.uk/treering/). ETRL is housed in the Forestry Research Centre (FRC) of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) (http://www.eiar.gov.et/). The major task of the ETRL is to study the growth characteristics of various tree species to establish tree-ring chronologies that will be used to model forest growth and to reconstruct long-term rainfall variability and drought history in Ethiopia. This research will assist with the development of strategies for managing scarce water and forest resources, as well as sustaining agricultural production during drought years.

The ETRL aims also at providing a focus for the dendroclimatology and dendroecology research activities of foreign and local graduate students and researchers who are using tree ring research to describe ecosystem dynamics and the character of temporal and spatial climate variability of the past which will advance our understanding of climate shifts in Ethiopia.
